The original church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception was intended as the Lady Chapel for Liverpool’s new cathedral of Our Lady & St Edward.

When it was later decided to build the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King in the City Centre, the Lady Chapel became home to the new parish of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.

The original building lasted more than a century on the highest point in Liverpool before becoming structurally unsound.

The present church was adapted from a large room in the parish social club. It contains many fixtures from the original building including the font, the tabernacle and some of the stained glass.

There are still social facilities in the building making this one of the few churches in Christendom where you can pass from the nave to the bar without being exposed to the elements!

The parish is now part of the North Liverpool Pastoral Area and shares a priest, Graeme Dunne (right), with the neighbouring St Anthony, Scotland Road, and Our Lady of Reconciliation, Eldon Street.

For Christmas, the Paschal Triduum and other major feasts, the three parishes join as one and a special Community Choir is formed for the occasion.

Below, our parish singers head off to Aintree races for Ladies’ Day.
